Deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students often navigate learning environments not designed with their communication needs in mind. This course provides educators with the knowledge and practical strategies needed to better support DHH learners through an exploration of Deaf culture, identity, communication, and the history of deaf education. You'll also be introduced to the foundations of American Sign Language (ASL), exploring key features of the language and learning practical signs that can support communication with deaf students and families. Learn how language access, accommodations, assistive technology, and Universal Design for Learning can increase participation and remove barriers to learning. Throughout the course, you'll apply your learning by creating resources and a Classroom Accessibility Plan. You'll leave the course with practical tools and greater confidence to support deaf and hard of hearing students in your educational setting.
