Beyond the Book: Creating a Comprehensive Unit for Born a Crime | Teaching Channel

It’s Trevor Noah: Born a Crime, and other young adult book editions, provide opportunities to teach new ideas in developmentally appropriate ways. We know teachers rarely have time to innovate their lessons, let alone to create an entire unit of study…until now! This Beyond the Book Series course will empower you to design an instructional unit for It’s Trevor Noah: Born a Crime. Explore historical information and multimedia resources about Apartheid, including connections between Apartheid and present-day human rights issues. Identify key themes related to identity and belonging, and analyze the text using a variety of comprehension strategies. Then, using best practices in Backwards Design and Universal Design for Learning (UDL), create a variety of learning activities and a final project to create a dynamic, engaging unit!  By the end of this course, you will have a complete unit of study, and feel energized, confident, and ready to teach Born a Crime.
